Jim Bellows R.I.P.

This obituary for a friend in the journalism industry is long overdue. Jim Bellows was a writer for several prominent newspapers and worked as a writer at Prodigy in the 1980s, back when the internet was young. He was the man who put sensationalism back into a dull breed of media by writing for secondary newspapers. This was his way of increasing competition with bigger news outlets like the New York Times and the Washington Post. He died on March 6, 2009 of Alzheimer’s disease.

OneSwarm – Secure P2P made easy
As of late, the only way to share files among friends and and family has mostly been over Gnutella and BitTorrent networks, both of which are insecure and reveal identifiable online data such as your IP address. If you have been considering a more secure form of sharing, take a look at OneSwarm, developed by students from the University of Washington. Unlike conventional methods of file sharing, OneSwarm creates a secure tunnel between you and all the friends on your buddy list for sharing files with. OneSwarm offers a web-based interface that runs right from your favorite browser and has a very eye pleasing look. It has the ability to search for data within the cloud, stream audio and video data as it is downloading said file (thanks to on-the-fly transcoding), and has the ability to utilize the BitTorrent network for outside-the-cloud downloading/uploading. OneSwarm is basically a souped up DC++ for the rest of us. As of this writing, this program is still a research experiment and may still have unresolved issues or lacking features. The supported OSes are Windows, Mac OS X and Linux (x86 and x64 varieties).
DISCLAIMER: This software is intended for sharing files of legal nature amongst friends. The authors of this software, nor myself, can be held responsible for any illegal use.

Add an insane kick to tuna salad!
So yes, now begins my rant on an important subject… food! More importantly, food during lent. So, as a Roman Catholic, I eat meatless on fridays and I am always up for experiments with fish. I always wasn’t very fond of tuna salad until my friend back at the university introduced me to his father’s tuna salad recipe and, oh boy, was that good. Turns out that 99% of the ingredients were similar to my version of tuna salad, until I ran my finger down the list of ingredients and spotted out “onion powder”. I stood thereĀ flabbergastedĀ thinking, all this time, I could have been enjoying some of the best tuna salad ever if only I had ever known about such an ingredient. So, next time you prepare tuna salad, don’t forget to add some onion powder. You won’t be sorry.

Well, in these troubled economic times, there is one provider that has the answer your wallet’s prayers. Enter Astraweb. With ever climbing retention (over 180 days as of this writing), excellent completion, free SSL and up to twenty connections, you simply cannot go wrong with them; especially when monthly plans start as low as $10! File Savr – A phenominal (not anymore) free file host!

So… you are just plain sick and tired of Rapidshare, Megaupload and all the free file host services that have retarded waiting times for downloads and puny upload sizes. Well then why bother with all of this when you can use a service with upload file sizes up to 10GBs and no waiting? Seriously man! Strap on another pair and check out File Savr! This file hosting service is, hands down, the best I have ever used. It is fast, generous with file sizes, and has a wonderful tech support staff. Also, for people who need more than 10GB for a single file and no time limit on the download link, they also offer plans that are ridiculously cheap.
NOTE: Just the other day, apparently all of my files sort of *disappeared*. Next time, before I give such a glowing review of a file host, I should do more research.
